Software & Hardware Tracker now includes version 5.5v2 of the FileMaker Pro runtime application. When used with the Classic version of the runtime application, the program operates on Mac OS 8.1 through Mac OS 9.x. When used with the Mac OS X version of the runtime application, it operates natively on Mac OS X (version 10.0.4 or later) with no dependence on the Classic environment.

Users of Software & Hardware Tracker PRO still need a full copy of FileMaker Pro 5.x or FileMaker Pro 6 to edit the databases. Note that only FileMaker Pro 5.5 (or later) operates natively on Mac OS X.

Registered users of Software & Hardware Tracker 4 can upgrade for free to the Mac OS X version.

Of course, if you wish to show your appreciation for our work by registering again or by upgrading your current registration option, your support is always welcome :-)

About Software & Hardware Tracker

SHT

Software & Hardware Tracker is a collection of FileMaker Pro 5.x (".fp5") relational databases that will help you store and organize useful information (such as registration codes, serial numbers, product notes, etc.) about all your computer products (hardware and software). It is also fully compatible with FileMaker Pro 6.

Once registered, Software & Hardware Tracker becomes password protected and people without a valid password are denied access, thus protecting your data.

Software & Hardware Tracker 4 comes with a runtime version of the FileMaker Pro 5.5 application. Thus people who do not own a copy of FileMaker Pro 5.5 can still use it. The runtime version of FileMaker Pro 5.5 offers many features found in the original application, such as a spell checker, convenient toolbars etc. and operates natively on Mac OS X

Software & Hardware Tracker is shareware. Shareware is "try-before-you-buy" software: download Software & Hardware Tracker and evaluate it. Then, if you want to keep on using it beyond the 30-day trial period, honor the shareware system and pay the registration fee. Otherwise, just remove Software & Hardware Tracker from your hard disk.

To see full-size screenshots of the program, just click on the provided thumbnails. Both form and list views are supported throughout the program, as shown in these two Product Tracker screenshots:

Software & Hardware Tracker makes it very easy to view your data in the most convenient and efficient way. Information are available either by accessing the relevant databases directly or through "portals" and scripts. For instance, you can check purchase information for both products and workstations:

Computers are tracked in their own database: the Workstation Tracker, which lets you store information that only applies to actual computers (such as network info or technical specifications), as well as see at a glance all the products, hardware and software, installed on a given workstation (the number of computers you can track depends on the registration option you choose):

Relying on the standard Internet Config system (which is present by default in Mac OS 8.5 or later: look for the Internet IC control panel), Software & Hardware Tracker is perfectly integrated with your other Internet software. It also keeps track of all your contact information for software and hardware developers, distributors, places of purchase and support providers, turning it into a powerful contact and Internet bookmark manager:

To provide all the features and flexibility needed by international users, Software & Hardware Tracker distinguishes between the author of a program, the company that makes it and the one that distributes it, i.e. the Japanese branch of Microsoft, Symantec U.K. or Apple Computer France. But this can also be useful for U.S. users, especially when dealing with shareware programs. For instance, DXoft is the developer responsible for creating Software & Hardware Tracker, but Kagi is distributing it:

System Requirements

Software & Hardware Tracker 4 comes with a runtime version of the FileMaker Pro 5.5v2 application. Thus people who do not own a copy of FileMaker Pro can still use it.

The system requirements are:

  • Any Power Macintosh® or Mac OS computer with a PowerPC processor capable of running FileMaker Pro 5.x FileMaker Pro.
  • A hard disk with at least 25 MB of free space.
  • At least 16 MB of RAM.
  • Mac OS 8.1 or later; built for Mac OS X (10.0.4 or later).
  • The Geneva and Times font famillies, which are included with your system software.

To be able to launch URLs (Universal Resource Locators) commonly referred to as "internet addresses" or "bookmarks" directly from inside Software & Hardware Tracker, you need:

  • A connection to the Internet.
  • Internet Config (which is present by default in Mac OS 8.5 or later and in Mac OS X: look for the Internet IC control panel).

Note:

  • While the program may work with FileMaker Pro 5.x for Windows, it hasn't been tested and is not supported under such configurations. Only Mac OS configurations are supported at this time.
  • To publish the databases over a network, you need a copy of the FileMaker Pro 5.x application: the runtime version of the application doesn't offer that feature. The same restriction applies to users of the PRO version of the program is they want to edit layouts and fields. Note that only FileMaker Pro 5.5 (or later) operates natively on Mac OS X.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker 4 has its own creator code, 'TFRK'. If you double-click on a database, the appropriate runtime application (Classic or X, depending on your Mac OS version) will launch and open the file. To open the databases in FileMaker Pro 5.x or FileMaker Pro 5.x Server (or later), change the databases' creator codes back to 'FMP5' (or drag and drop them on the appropriate application if applicable.)

Software & Hardware Tracker 4.2

SHT

Software & Hardware Tracker 4.2 is now available. It resolves some minor issues in the original 4.0.x releases and now includes a Mac OS X version of the FileMaker Pro 5.5 runtime application. It is a recommended and free upgrade for registered users of Software & Hardware Tracker 4.

A complete version history comes with the program. Here are the main changes in version 4.2v1 (10/27/2004). It only includes updates to the documentation, so if you have already downloaded version 4.2, you don't need this new version:

  • The creator code of the files that come without runtime solutions has been changed back to 'FMP5' so that users of the complete FileMaker Pro applicationcan open them directly.
  • Added instructions to help people upgrade from an earlier Software & Hardware Tracker 4 release.
  • Added some information about the next version of the solution, Xware Tracker, which is being entirely rewritten to take advantage of FileMaker Pro 7.

Software & Hardware Tracker 4 is a major upgrade to the program, resolving all known issues and offering many improvements and refinements:

  • Software & Hardware Tracker 4 comes with a runtime version of FileMaker Pro 5.5, thus avoiding the backward compatibility issues raised by the latest release of FileMaker Pro. Also, people who don't own FileMaker Pro can now use the program. Only users of the PRO version, if they want to customize the program, or publish it on a network, will need to own a copy of the FileMaker Pro 5.x (or later) application.
  • FileMaker Pro 5.5 operates natively on Mac OS X. The runtime version of FileMaker Pro 5.5 included with the program is available both as a Classic application (for use with Mac OS 8.1 or later) and as a Mac OS X application.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker 4 offers an improved user interface, more consistent and efficient, simpler to use and to master. The program is now much less complex from the user's perspective.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker 4 also offers a much richer Workstation Tracker, letting you enter even more information about your computers.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker 4 lets users protect their data with a password of their choosing and offers improved user preferences.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker 4 imports version 3.6 (and version 3.6 only) records transparently: upgrading is easy and quick.

Please read the documentation that comes with the program at least once before using it. It explains all that you should know about it and should answer most of your questions. Making sure you understand from the start how the program works will save you a lot of time.

Please note:

  • The runtime version of the FileMaker Pro application doesn't let you edit databases nor publish them over a network: you need a full copy of the FileMaker Pro 5.x application to use those features and to be able to take real advantage of the PRO registration option.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker 4 requires FileMaker Pro 5 or later, which is PowerPC-only.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker 3.6 is the last version compatible with FileMaker Pro 3/4 and with 68K Macs.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker 3.6 also acts as a data converter: records exported from version 3.6 (and only version 3.6) can be imported automatically into Software & Hardware Tracker 4. So, if you plan to upgrade to Software & Hardware Tracker 4, you must start by importing your data into version 3.6 and then go from there.
  • For those reasons, Software & Hardware Tracker 3.6 will remain available for download from this web site.

You can download Software & Hardware Tracker 4 (and/or 3.6) below.

Registration Options

Software & Hardware Tracker is shareware. Shareware is "try-before-you-buy" software: download Software & Hardware Tracker and evaluate it. Then, if you want to keep on using it beyond the 30-day trial period, honor the shareware system and pay the registration fee. Otherwise, just remove Software & Hardware Tracker from your hard disk.

There are three registration options:

  • Software & Hardware Tracker LITE costs $15: aimed at individual users who need to keep track of the software and hardware installed on their personal computer, it is limited to one workstation record.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker costs $25: the fully enabled version of the program lets you keep track of an unlimited number of workstations; the only restriction is that you can't edit layouts and scripts, but must use the program as is.
  • Software & Hardware Tracker PRO costs $50: this version lets you access the entire database, including layout, field and script editing functions, so that you can customize Software & Hardware Tracker to better fit your specific needs. You need to own a copy of the FileMaker Pro 5.x application to take full advantage of Software & Hardware Tracker PRO: the runtime version of the application doesn't let you edit layouts and scripts, nor publish databases over a network.

You can upgrade from one registration option to the next at any time.

If you are a registered user of Software & Hardware Tracker 1.x/2.x/3.x and want to upgrade to Software & Hardware Tracker 4 while keeping the same registration option, please refer to the "Upgrading to Version 4" section below for details. However, you can choose to upgrade your current registration option instead.

You can register or upgrade your current registration option online:

When upgrading, you must provide us with your current registration information so that we can verify that you qualify for the upgrade.

Registrations are handled by Kagi.
